AWRA AMBA -  A THRIVING GENDER EQUAL DEMOCRACY

Awra Amba is a small village in Northern Ethiopia that was founded in the early 1970s by a group of idealistic farmers. The farmers, all illiterate at the time, set out to co-create a new society from scratch; where women and men would be treated as equals, and where everyone would have access to education and healthcare. Since then Awra Amba has transformed itself into a thriving community of around 500 people, with over 80 university graduates who were born and raised there. The village, which is run by 13 democratically elected committees, helps thousands of people in the region and receives visitors from all over the world.

THE AWRA AMBA EDUCATIONAL RESOURCE

The Awra Amba Experience is a beautiful and immersive interactive learning environment, where pupils can explore the village and draw inspiration from their remarkable stories. The experience delves into themes such as equality, democracy, human rights, sustainability and entrepreneurship; and promotes values such as tolerance, empathy, generosity and delayed gratification. The Awra Amba lesson plans are all designed to be cross-curricular and flexible, ideal for KS2 and KS3 Citizenship, as well as English / Literacy, Geography, PSHE, RE and SMSC.

Awra Amba is a beautifully produced, inspiring resource from which much can be learned about community, equality, enterprise and generosity. This is an opportunity not to be missed!
