This year, Awra Amba, a community which is featured in one of our storyworld series, celebrated its 50th anniversary. The journey of this small village, founded by Zumra Nuru and a small group of farmers in the Amhara region in Northern Ethiopia, is nothing short of awe-inspiring and I’m grateful to have been a part of that in some small way.

The last time my partner Serdar and I visited Awra Amba in Ethiopia was exactly 10 years ago. We were invited to their 40th anniversary celebration and the inauguration of their high school. At that time, we were in the middle of producing the Awra Amba documentary together with some of the community members. By 2012 the village had already gained a solid reputation all over Ethiopia. Many tourists, journalists, researchers and filmmakers had also started taking note and writing about the community in international media.
Awra Amba turning 50 marks a new era for the community which in the last 10 years has made leaps and bounds developing economically, while keeping sustainability and environmental protection at the core. The community has always been concerned with the environment, protecting their rivers, trees and lands but also of the wellbeing of people, not only those living there but also in neighbouring communities. I spoke with Zumra's son, Awoke, who is 24 years old and is studying Civil Engineering in Gujarat, India. I've know Awoke since he was a young boy when I first went to Awra Amba in 2008. Over the years, we have kept in touch and I have followed his journey and been able to keep up to date with news from the Awra Amba community.

The anniversary

The anniversary event took place in May 2022 and was attended by approximately 1000 people. A large tent was erected in the village and several political figures attended, including the Minister for Women and Social Affairs, and the Minister of Culture and Tourism. Other guests included university professors, researchers and students from around the country, and people from the neighbouring communities. The Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed even wrote about the anniversary on his Facebook account!
During the day there were presentations and discussions around how to best share the values of Awra Amba with other communities in Ethiopia. There was also a book launch ceremony, for a new book written by the Ethiopian authors Dr Zekarias Amdebirhan, Tibebu Belete and Dr Kindalem Damtie, which delves into the history of the village. On the day, Awoke told me, the whole student population in Awra Amba came together to cook food and serve the guests throughout the day. Awra Amba's own community band played music and the soft drinks were sponsored by the Ethiopian drinks brand SEN'Q.

Awoke also told me that in recent years there has been a move towards a healthier lifestyle in Awra Amba. The community has started producing niger seed oil, which is believed to have a number of health benefits, particularly its ability to speed up healing, protect the skin, improve heart health, aid sleep, reduce inflammation etc. He also told me that the general income level per community member has increased, hence improving the quality of life in the community.

I got to know the Awra Amba community 18 years ago. Having watched them grow, develop and flourish over the years warms my heart. I really admire them for their courage and perseverance, during a journey which certainly hasn't been an easy one. They stood up for what they believe in, despite being criticised and persecuted. They believed in their values and in themselves to overcome many hurdles. I am excited to see what the next 10 years will bring for the people of Awra Amba and seeing the amazing advancements both economically and sustainably that are planned for the future of the village. And I hope I won't have to wait another 10 years before I visit them!

The new Rich Media Articles
The new Rich Media Articles
To mark Awra Amba's 50th anniversary, we reflected on our storyworld series and decided to expand our resources on the topic of aid and development to allow teachers and students to explore these complex issues, particularly in a time when aid and sustainable development is on national and international agendas. In the Visitors' Centre, Enaney told us how Awra Amba rejected aid in their early days which was unusual. To support classroom discussion, we have added the rich media article 'What is aid?' to explore the different kinds of aid, how it is funded, and some of the complexities that surround aid and how it aims to fight poverty. This new rich media, along with the rest of the Visitors' Centre storyworld, is available to explore with a free Lyfta Starter account
We will continue to watch this inspiring community and look forward to seeing what the next 10 years will bring.
