This assembly is suitable for KS3 and above. We show one film which is 'U' rated. **The other films in the storyworlds are rated higher (PG, 12) and we advise checking their descriptions first before proceeding.** This lesson introduces Maria, an Afro-Colombian midwife on the Pacific coast of Colombia. We meet her as she goes about her work caring for pregnant women and their babies in Buenaventura. This place has local tensions and conflict, and the film shows security forces patrolling. We also briefly look at 2 other contexts but don't watch these films. **Please note: Do watch Maria's film first as it should be noted that.** - the film is set in an area of Colombia dealing with conflict. - Maria describes a potent herbal drink called Tomaseca that is made from medicinal plants and alcohol which is used during labour - She tells a story where gunshots are heard on a midwifery visit - She recalls a story from the ‘old people’ about angels, the spirit world and babies - which she laughs off, but which might need your reassurance if sharing with younger learners. **Whilst this film is a BBFC ‘U’ rated film please watch the film first.** **Lyfta Core themes:** Community and Citizenship, Culture and Identity, Equality and Human Rights, Health and Wellbeing, Learning and Growth, Natural Environment, Professions and Entrepreneurship, Relationships. **SDGs:** 3,5,10,11. **National Curriculum Objectives:** This assembly supports the SRE framework and touches on aspects of PSHE around pregnancy and birth plus careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG) on careers in midwifery.
