Character & Values Education

Character and values are formed in the small, everyday moments of school life - a classroom discussion, an assembly story, a moment of disagreement - as much as in policies or frameworks. Schools are increasingly looking for ways to notice and name that learning, both for pupils making sense of their own growth, and for teachers building a clearer picture of what's already working.

Character and values education has always mattered to schools -  helping pupils build the habits, relationships and sense of purpose they need for life beyond the classroom is not a new ambition. What's shifting is the expectation to evidence it: following the Curriculum and Assessment Review (the Francis Review), the DfE's new Enrichment Framework, published in June 2026, sets out non-statutory guidance on building a broad, purposeful enrichment offer, and from September 2026 Ofsted is expected to use it as a reference point when evaluating Personal Development and Well-being.

Across PSHE, RSHE, SMSC, citizenship, assemblies, tutor time and wider enrichment, values-based education gives schools a practical way to connect personal development, school ethos, belonging and respectful relationships.

Lyfta brings these ideas to life through immersive human stories from around the world. Pupils encounter real people living values such as compassion, courage, responsibility and resilience, then use enquiry, discussion and reflection to build empathy, perspective-taking and critical thinking. The concepts and articles below explore how schools can make character education and values-based education meaningful, memorable and rooted in everyday learning.
