Assembly: Volunteering for a cause

This assembly is adaptable for primary or secondary pupils. We meet Dr Odry, a surgeon volunteering on an international hospital ship. We explore the theme of volunteering and touch upon the international charity running Mercy Ships, which is Christian in nature. **National Curriculum objectives:** KS2/3 PSHE / Health Education Understanding teamwork, empathy, communication and resilience, and how people work together to support health and wellbeing. Exploring how individuals can contribute to helping others. KS2 PSHE L26. that there is a broad range of different jobs/careers that people can have; that people often have more than one career/type of job during their life L28. about what might influence people’s decisions about a job or career L29. that some jobs are paid more than others; that people may choose to do voluntary work which is unpaid L30. about some of the skills that will help them in their future careers e.g. teamwork, communication and negotiation L31. to identify the kind of job that they might like to do when they are older L4. the importance of having compassion towards others; shared responsibilities we all have for caring for other people and living things; how to show care and concern for others KS3 PSHE L11. different types and patterns of work, including employment, self-employment and voluntary work. KS3 Citizenship - Learning about volunteering, charitable organisations and global humanitarian work, including how teams support communities with limited healthcare access. KS2/3 RE Linking to your locally agreed SACRE syllabus, through watching and discussing the film, pupils will: - Recognise how faith can inspire people to help others - Explore how prayer and belief can be part of everyday working life - Understand that charities are often motivated by religious values - Make links between Christian teachings about helping others and real-world examples - Reflect on why people choose to volunteer and serve communities in need.
