Teacher notes

This lesson is suitable for KS2 and KS3. There are also suggestions to simplify the lesson for KS1 included in the teacher notes. Taking young learners to see and touch trees in the school grounds or nearby would be really valuable. Bark rubbings would also be a creative activity! This lesson introduces Ambassador Kwon, planting trees in the deserts of northwest China to address problems caused by desertification and climate change. **Lyfta core themes:** Natural Environment, Health and Wellbeing, Professions and Entrepreneurship.** **Lyfta core skills and values**: Active Citizenship & Political Awareness, Coaching & Mentoring, Collaboration & Teamwork, Environment & Sustainability, Healthy Living, Leadership, Perspective-Taking, Responsibility & Accountability, Taking Initiative, Work Ethic. **SDGs:** 3,11,13,15. **National Curriculum objectives:** KS2 Geography: - Describe and understand key aspects of physical geography, including: climate zones, biomes and vegetation belts, and the water cycle. (adaptations for KS1 Geography: make observations of the environment in and around their school, looking at trees.) KS3 Geography - Physical geography relating to: weathering and soils; weather and climate and hydrology - Human geography relating to: population and urbanisation and the use of natural resources - How human and physical processes interact to influence and change landscapes, environments and the climate; and how human activity relies on the effective functioning of natural systems - Extend locational knowledge and deepen spatial awareness of the world’s countries to focus on Africa, Russia, Asia (including China and India), focusing on their environmental regions, including polar and hot deserts, key physical and human characteristics, countries and major cities. KS1/2 Science - Identify that most living things live in habitats to which they are suited - Describe how different habitats provide for the basic needs of different kinds of animals and plants, and how they depend on each other (KS1 Science specific: identify and name a variety of deciduous and evergreen trees; identify and describe the basic structure of a variety of plants, including trees.) KS2 and KS3 English: Writing composition - Draft and write for different purposes and audiences.
