This lesson is aimed at KS3 and upper KS2 and explores careers in healthcare and medicine; and wider careers alongside Dr Odry's surgical role on an international hospital ship. There is a focus on teamwork, international cooperation and volunteering. **National Curriculum objectives:** KS2/3 PSHE / Health Education Understanding teamwork, empathy, communication and resilience, and how people work together to support health and wellbeing. Exploring how individuals can contribute to helping others. KS2 PSHE L26. that there is a broad range of different jobs/careers that people can have; that people often have more than one career/type of job during their life L27. about stereotypes in the workplace and that a person’s career aspirations should not be limited by them L28. about what might influence people’s decisions about a job or career L29. that some jobs are paid more than others and money is one factor which may influence a person’s job or career choice; that people may choose to do voluntary work which is unpaid L30. about some of the skills that will help them in their future careers e.g. teamwork, communication and negotiation L31. to identify the kind of job that they might like to do when they are older L32. to recognise a variety of routes into careers (e.g. college, apprenticeship, university) L4. the importance of having compassion towards others; shared responsibilities we all have for caring for other people and living things; how to show care and concern for others KS3 PSHE L11. different types and patterns of work, including employment, self-employment and voluntary work; that everyone has a different pathway through life, education and work. Upper KS2/KS3 Careers Education / Gatsby Benchmarks - Developing awareness of different careers in healthcare, including both medical and non-medical roles (e.g., surgeons, nurses, engineers, translators, cooks), and understanding the skills needed for different jobs. KS2/3 Science – Working Scientifically / Human Health – Understanding how medical treatment and healthcare systems support human health, and how professionals work together to deliver patient care. KS3 Citizenship - Learning about volunteering, charitable organisations and global humanitarian work, including how teams support communities with limited healthcare access. KS2/3 English - Reading and discussing informational non-fiction texts, developing subject vocabulary related to healthcare and teamwork, and responding to reflective questions about roles and skills.
