Climate change & extreme weather: Pt 1

This is the first lesson of two which are suitable for KS4 students. This could be delivered either in a geography or English language lesson or in a cross-curricular fashion. In this lesson, students will find out more about carbon emissions, carbon footprints, the greenhouse effect and how this contributes to climate change. They'll also meet Carlos, from Campur in Guatemala, a region devastated by flooding as a result of Hurricane Iota and Hurricane Eta. This will allow students to begin making connections between climate change and extreme weather events. In lesson two, students will begin to consider how more economically developed countries (MEDCs) might do more to prevent least economically developed countries (LEDCs) suffering the results of climate change. **Lyfta core themes:** Community and citizenship. natural environment. **Lyfta core skills and values**: Active Citizenship & Political Awareness, Communication, Empathy & Understanding Others, Environment & Sustainability. **UN SDGs:** 1, 2, 6, 7, 10, 11, 13, 17. **GCSE Geography objectives:** - AO2: Demonstrate understanding of the inter-relationships between places, environments and processes - AO3: Apply knowledge and understanding to interpret, analyse and evaluate geographical information and issues and to make judgements. **KS4 English language skill:** - Reading widely for information.
