Documentary literacy & critical thinking (Primary)

This short lesson will help you develop a deeper understanding of the nature of Lyfta's documentary films and how they are created for our audiences. There is also a teacher/CPD version of this lesson plan called 'Documentary literacy'. If time is restricted, the lesson could be split into two lessons, Part I and Part II. The session will introduce: - Truth, viewpoint and representation - Filmmaking style The lesson will invite you to use two films as a way in: **The Ball Is Not All** (from Eyes On The Ball) and **Home Shore Gourmet** (from The Fish Chef). Lyfta core themes: Community and Citizenship, Learning and Growth, Professions and Entrepreneurship. Lyfta core skills and values: Active Citizenship and Political Awareness, Communication, Creativity and Innovation, Digital Literacy, Empathy and Understanding Others, Responsibility and Accountability. SDGs: Whilst this lesson is not explicitly linked to any one SDG, the focus on fundraising, charity and taking positive action could lead you to explore many of the goals. For example, you could select the work of a relevant fundraising / charity organisation and investigate the SDGs linked to it, e.g. selecting the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to explore SDGs linked to nature. **National Curriculum objectives:** KS2 Citizenship 1 a. to talk and write about their opinions, and explain their views, on issues that affect themselves and society; 2e. to reflect on spiritual, moral, social, and cultural issues, using imagination to understand other people's experiences 4a. that actions affect themselves and others, to care about other people's feelings and to try to see things from their point of view; 4b. to think about the lives of people living in other places and times, and people with different values and customs; 4e. to recognise and challenge stereotypes; KS2 PSHE R12. to recognise what it means to 'know someone online' and how this differs from knowing someone face-to-face; risks of communicating online with others not known face-to-face R32. about respecting the differences and similarities between people and recognising what they have in common with others R33. to listen and respond respectfully to a wide range of people, including those whose traditions, beliefs and lifestyles are different to their own.
