This lesson is aimed at children in KS2 or above. It could be linked to school council, local and national elections as well as International Democracy Day (September). **Lyfta core themes:** Community and Citizenship, Equality and Human Rights. **Lyfta core skills and values:** Active Citizenship and Political Awareness, Collaboration and Teamwork, Communication, Decision making, Human Rights, Leadership. **SDGS:** 5, 16. **National Curriculum objectives:** KS2 PSHE R21. to learn about discrimination: what it means and how to challenge it R34. to understand how to discuss and debate topical issues, respect other people’s point of view and constructively challenge those they disagree with. KS2 Citizenship to understand what democracy is, and about the basic institutions that support it locally and nationally 2b. to learn why and how rules and laws are made and enforced, why different rules are needed in different situations and how to take part in making and changing rules. KS2 English - Retrieve, record and present information from non-fiction - plan their writing by: identifying the audience for and purpose of the writing, selecting the appropriate form and using other similar writing as models for their own. - to consider and evaluate different viewpoints, attending to and building on the contributions of others. KS3 Citizenship - develop pupils’ understanding of democracy, government and the rights and responsibilities of citizens - develop understanding of the political system of democratic government in the UK and other countries; including Parliament.
