Lesson plan

Explore AI (Pt. 1)

Meet Ilya, a computer scientist working in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and learn about some of its potentials and issues.

Teacher notes

**This is the 1st of a 2-part lesson introducing Ilya, Co-Founder and then Chief Scientist at Open AI.** Both lessons explore the possibilities, potentials, risks, limitations and problems of AI and AGI. It is a complete pair of lessons and needs teaching in two or more parts. You could use the lesson pair to explore AI technologies that impact our lives from multiple perspectives. It aims to develop critical thinking and to ask students to recognise multiple perspectives, including how some online content is manipulated. **We strongly advise that you skim-read the article 'A brief history of AI' including the simple glossary at the bottom before teaching, so you can discuss the concept of AI and AGI before viewing the film.** **National Curriculum objectives:** KS3 PSHE L20. that features of the internet can amplify risks and opportunities, e.g. speed and scale of information sharing, blurred public and private boundaries and a perception of anonymity L23. to recognise the importance of seeking a variety of perspectives on issues and ways of assessing the evidence which supports those views L25. to make informed decisions about whether different media and digital content are appropriate to view and develop the skills to act on them L26. that on any issue there will be a range of viewpoints; to recognise the potential influence of extreme views on people’s attitudes and behaviours. KS4 PSHE H18. the ways in which industries and advertising can influence health and harmful behaviours R15. strategies for recognising and managing peer influence and a desire for peer approval in friendships; to recognise the effect of online actions on others L24. that social media may disproportionately feature exaggerated or inaccurate information about situations, or extreme viewpoints L25. how personal data is generated, collected and shared, and the consequences of this L26. how data may be used with the aim of influencing decisions, including targeted advertising and other forms of personalisation online L27. strategies to critically assess bias, reliability and accuracy in digital content. KS5 PSHE L23. how social media can expand, limit or distort perspectives and recognise how content they create and share may contribute to, or challenge this L24. to be a critical consumer of online information in all its forms, including recognising bias, propaganda and manipulation. KS3/4 English skills: Reading comprehension (Part 1 of the lesson) Information retrieval, identifying main ideas and summarising these (non-fiction); Reading for meaning. Computing/ ICT: - Builds on students’ understanding of AI and introduces AGI, the opportunities they may offer, and the risks to society and planet, - Develops students’ digital literacy, especially understanding algorithms and how to evaluate digital content.
