This lesson is suitable for KS2 and KS1 if you can read the article Explore Madagascar together with your youngest pupils. Pupils will meet Dr Odry in Madagascar, go on a tuk tuk ride through the town and discover the unique creatures of this Indian Ocean island. **National Curriculum objectives:** KS1/ KS2 Geography - Locating Madagascar on a world map; understanding physical geography (rainforests, deserts, coasts, climate) and human geography (farming, fishing, trade, population and settlements). - Exploring deforestation, conservation and sustainability, and how human activities affect ecosystems and wildlife. KS1/KS2 Science: Living things and their habitats: - Learning about different habitats and ecosystems, and how animals and plants are adapted to them, using examples such as the Lemur, Panther chameleon, and Baobab tree. Upper KS2: Evolution and Inheritance: - Understanding how species evolve and adapt over time, illustrated by Madagascar’s many endemic species that developed after the island became isolated. KS1/KS2 English - Reading and understanding informational non-fiction texts, retrieving key facts about a place, its wildlife and its people, and developing topic vocabulary related to geography and science. KS2 Citizenship - to recognise the role of voluntary, community and pressure groups; KS1 PSHE H10. about the people who help us to stay physically healthy KS2 PSHE L26. that there is a broad range of different jobs/careers that people can have; that people often have more than one career/type of job during their life L29. that people may choose to do voluntary work which is unpaid.
