This lesson plan would work with or without the main film. We suggest exploring San Francisco without 'The Man Behind Chat GPT' if you want a complete focus on geography and literacy, and for the youngest learners. We have included the film here because it has great visuals of the city, despite the focus of the film being technology and innovation. Feel free to include or not - or you could use this lesson as an introduction to the city and then move on to exploring AI and digital literacy in a subsequent lesson. This lesson introduces Ilya, Co-Founder and then Chief Scientist at OpenAI. **Teacher note 1:** If you do include the film, we suggest skim-reading the article 'A brief history of AI' including the glossary to support your discussion of AI and AGI with students. **Teacher note 2:** There are many songs that celebrate the city. You might like to play these for your class: Otis Redding's Sittin’ on the dock of the Bay; Scott McKenzie's San Francisco (Be sure to wear flowers in your hair). **National Curriculum objectives:** KS2 Geography - name and locate cities in North America (SF) and explore their physical and human characteristics - understand human geography, including: types of settlement and land use. KS3 Geography - extend locational knowledge, focusing on key physical and human characteristics of major cities - understand human geography relating to: population and urbanisation; international development; economic activity; and the use of natural resources - understand how human and physical processes interact to influence, and change landscapes and environments. KS4. GCSE Geography (consult your examination board): Human geography: processes and change - Cities and urban society – An overview of the causes and effects of rapid urbanisation and contrasting urban trends in different parts of the world with varying characteristics of economic and social development. Develop an understanding of the causes and impacts of national and international migration on the growth and character of these cities. KS2 English - to read texts structured in different ways and for a range of purposes, identifying main ideas and summarising these - to retrieve and record information from non-fiction - to develop oracy. KS3 English skills: Reading comprehension - information retrieval, identifying main ideas and summarising these (non-fiction) - reading for meaning. If you do the tourist brochure task, you can also include: Planning; organising information and ideas; writing non-fiction; audience, purpose and form; using language effectively; developing vocabulary.
