In this lesson we meet Mono, working in Santiago, capital city of Chile. We explore this South American city and develop reading comprehension skills. Note: Activity 1 can be removed for a KS3 classroom if appropriate. Instead explore the Santiago rich media article in Activity 3 more deeply, especially the section on tectonic plates (see additional geography questions in teacher notes). **National Curriculum objectives:** KS2/3 English (reading comprehension) Develop reading comprehension skills: - read texts structured in different ways and for a range of purposes, identifying main ideas and summarising these - retrieve, record and present information from non-fiction. KS2 Geography - locate the world’s countries using maps to focus on South America, concentrating on their environmental regions, key physical and human characteristics, countries, and major cities (Santiago, Chile) - understand geographical similarities and differences through the study of human and physical geography of a region of the UK and a region within South America - describe and understand key aspects of physical geography, including volcanoes and earthquakes. KS3 Geography - extend locational knowledge, focusing on key physical and human characteristics of major cities (Santiago) - understand physical geography relating to: geological timescales and plate tectonics.
