This lesson can be taught as a stand alone lesson. **It is suitable for KS2 and above or KS1 (Year 2) with support.** It is not necessary to watch the storyworld's film to access this lesson plan but teachers can choose to play the film to see the variety of fashions on display. **You will need to have a screen at the front of the class to show some examples of tie-dye fabrics, sourced from the internet.** You can also have one example t-shirt to show learners, and explain why recycling/upcycling is better than throwing clothes away and buying more new ones. The lesson plan for KS3 called **Sustainable fashion** explores this fully. If you would like to extend learning into work on African textiles, some school library services and museums have loan boxes of textiles and other resources from different African countries. Examples you may like to explore include Adinkra prints or Kente weaving from Ghana and indigo dye across West Africa. **What you need:** - Pupils to bring in an old item their parents are happy for them to dye. Old white t-shirts are ideal, especially if 100% cotton. Poly-cotton mixes give a more faded look. - A tie-dye kit - enough for all items. - Elastic bands - Gloves- old washing up gloves are good - Plenty of recycled carrier bags - Drying rack/ dryer. **The t-shirts may need to be washed/ damp before you start, but always follow your tie-dye kit instructions.** **Sustainable dyes:** Please note using more natural dyes, such as turmeric and beetroot, are more planet friendly. They may not be powerful enough for tie-dye but would be a different way to upcycle clothing in a more sustainable way.
