Grow your own food

Find out about growing food in Tanzania - and at home or in your school!

This lesson is suitable for KS2 and is adaptable for KS3. It is designed as a springboard into thinking where our food comes from, and why plants are so important. It also serves as a stimulus for some work in food technology and growing plants, after learning how Simon grows food with care for nature. **Lyfta core themes:** Health and Wellbeing, Learning and Growth, Natural Environment, Professions and Entrepreneurship. **Lyfta core skills and values**: Collaboration and Teamwork, Creativity and Innovation, Design Thinking, Environment and Sustainability, Healthy Living, Lifelong Learning, Organisation and Planning, Practical Life Skills. **SDGs:** 1,2,3,11,12,13,15. **National Curriculum Objectives:** KS2 Science - to explore examples of positive human impact on environments (using Kihamba/ permaculture) You can also use it to explore plants in terms of germination and growth; and perhaps carry out a fair test in the classroom, comparing different conditions. KS2/3 Design Technology: Cooking and Nutrition - to understand the source, seasonality and characteristics of a broad range of ingredients - understand and apply the principles of a healthy and varied diet/ of nutrition and health. KS2 Geography Describe and understand key aspects of: - physical geography, including: climate zones, biomes and vegetation belts, rivers, mountains, volcanoes - human geography, including: types of settlement and land use... the distribution of natural resources including energy, food, minerals and water. KS2 PSHE L5. ways of carrying out shared responsibilities for protecting the environment in school and at home.
