Have respect: Part 1

This is the first part of two lessons. In this lesson, we visit the library in the Ethiopian village of Awra Amba and meet Zumra, the founder of the community. We find out how the residents of Awra Amba kept the peace with their neighbours and about their ethos that underpins everything. In the main activity, children hold a class debate, choosing which side to take on an issue and presenting a short speech putting forward their ideas. This lesson is suited to KS2 and above and explores themes such as peace, respectful communication and religion. **Lyfta core themes:** Relationships, Community and Citizenship. **Lyfta core skills and values:** Conflict resolution, Active listening, Communication, Empathy and understanding others, Perspective taking, Respect. **SDG:** 16. **National Curriculum objectives:** KS2 English to participate in discussions, presentations, performances, role play, improvisations and debates to consider and evaluate different viewpoints, attending to and building on the contributions of others. KS2 Citizenship 4a. to recognise that their actions affect themselves and others, to care about other people's feelings and to try to see things from their points of view b. to think about the lives of people living in other places and times, and people with different values and customs. KS2 PSHE R34. to understand how to discuss and debate topical issues, respect other people’s point of view and constructively challenge those they disagree with.
