Teacher notes

This lesson is suitable for KS3 or upper KS2. It could be adapted for use in a KS4 Geography classroom using the compass rose at a more targeted level, and could be a 'double' compass rose if the same activity is applied for Finland or a different country setting. The films includes scenes where Jasmin is both excited, nervous, apprehensive and at one point angry that she has moved home. Yet as she grows more comfortable there, she identifies that she can overcome her fears and worries, and sends a powerful message that we all can, too. The film, and Jasmin's mother's interview, also mentions feelings of being made to feel different, and of racism. **Background note on Somaliland:** Somalia is an internationally recognised country, while Somaliland is a region in the north that declared independence in 1991 and runs its own government, even though most countries do not officially recognise it as separate from Somalia. **Lyfta Core themes:** Community and Citizenship, Culture and Identity, Equality and Human Rights, Health and Wellbeing, Learning and Growth, Relationships. **SDGs:**3, 4, 10, 11, 17. **Lyfta Core Skills and Values** Courage & Self-Confidence, Critical Thinking, Empathy & developing multiple perspectives, Intercultural Competence, Resilience & Perseverance. **National Curriculum Objectives:** KS3 Geography: Locational knowledge: - extend locational knowledge and deepen spatial awareness of the world’s countries to focus on Africa … focusing on their environmental regions, including polar and hot deserts, key physical and human characteristics, countries and major cities Place Knowledge: - understand geographical similarities, differences and links between places through the study of human and physical geography of a region within Africa Human and physical geography: - human geography relating to: population and urbanisation; international development; economic activity; and the use of natural resources.
