Lesson plan

Kids' Cup: Yu from China

We will meet Yu, leading her team from China in the Kids' Cup tournament in Norway.

Teacher notes

This lesson plan is one of a series of lesson plans for the storyworld series Kids' Cup, which has teams and stories from young footballers in China, Brazil, Palestine and the host nation Norway. It is adaptable and suitable for upper KS2 and KS3. **Note: The film in this lesson is recommended for upper KS2 and above as it explores themes of bereavement, resilience and coping with difficult emotions.** Younger pupils may need more explicit support to understand that grief can look different for everyone and that feeling sad, missing someone, or not feeling ready to talk are all normal responses. When using this film, encourage pupils to reflect on Yu’s strengths as a football captain, while reinforcing that resilience does not mean hiding difficult feelings - it means finding ways to keep going, with support from others when needed. Support ideas for any learners dealing with loss or bereavement are included at the end of the lesson plan. **Your pupils will need pens and paper for one activity.** **Lyfta core themes:** Culture and Identity, Relationships, Learning and Growth, Health and Wellbeing, Community and Citizenship, Equality and Human Rights. **Lyfta core skills and values**: Coaching & Mentoring, Collaboration & Teamwork, Communication, Coping Methods, Courage & Self-Confidence, Healthy Living, Intercultural Competence, Leadership, Perspective-Taking, Positive Attitude, Resilience & Perseverance, Resourcefulness & Learning from Failure, Work Ethic. **SDGs:** 3, 5. **National Curriculum objectives:** KS2 and KS3 PE Opportunities to use the Kids’ Cup storyworlds as a stimulus to discuss sports, competition, leadership and healthy living in the context of Yu’s experience.
