Meet Dr Odry volunteering on an international hospital ship docked in Madagascar. We'll explore this amazing ship and learn how the Africa Mercy vessel is powered by a team of international volunteers. It is most suitable for KS2 but with support (shared reading), year 2 and with some challenge Qs, KS3 also. You could use the partner article 'How a floating hospital works' with older students. **National Curriculum objectives:** KS2 (and KS1) Geography - Using maps/plans and understanding human features; exploring the deck plan and layout of a hospital ship and learning about places where healthcare access may be limited. KS2 PSHE Learning about teamwork, different jobs and helping communities, through the range of roles working together on the ship. L26. that there is a broad range of different jobs/careers that people can have; that people often have more than one career/type of job during their life L28. about what might influence people’s decisions about a job or career (e.g. personal interests and values) L29. that some jobs are paid more than others; that people may choose to do voluntary work which is unpaid L30. about some of the skills that will help them in their future careers e.g. teamwork, communication and negotiation L31. to identify the kind of job that they might like to do when they are older. KS2 Science - Animals Including Humans (KS1 & KS2) – Understanding health, medicine and how people care for the human body, linked to doctors, nurses and surgery on the ship. KS2 (and KS1) English - Reading and understanding non-fiction texts, developing subject vocabulary (e.g., port, starboard, bow, stern) and discussing information from the text. KS2 Citizenship - to recognise the role of voluntary, community and pressure groups.
