This lesson introduces one family living in the city of LA, California. It then looks at the city in more depth. Primary teachers might like to split the session into 2 if you opt to include the final more challenging rich media article. **National Curriculum objectives:** KS2 Geography - name and locate cities in North America (LA) and explore their their physical and human characteristics. - understand human geography, including: types of settlement and land use. - describe and understand key aspects of physical geography, including volcanoes and earthquakes. KS3 Geography - extend locational knowledge, focusing on key physical and human characteristics of major cities. - understand human geography relating to: population and urbanisation; international development; economic activity; and the use of natural resources. - understand how human and physical processes interact to influence, and change landscapes and environments. - understand physical geography relating to: geological timescales and plate tectonics. KS2 English (reading comprehension) - to read texts structured in different ways and for a range of purposes, identifying main ideas and summarising these. - to retrieve and record information from non-fiction.
