Lyfta Time #24: Yu from China

This lesson introduces Yu, Captain of the China team at the Kids' Cup tournament in Norway, and one of four storyworld series with teams and stories from young footballers in China, Brazil, Palestine and the host nation Norway. **Note: The film in this lesson is recommended for upper KS2 and above as it explores themes of bereavement, resilience and coping with difficult emotions.** Younger pupils may need more explicit support to understand that grief can look different for everyone and that feeling sad, missing someone, or not feeling ready to talk are all normal responses. When using this film, encourage pupils to reflect on Yu’s strengths as a football captain, while reinforcing that resilience does not mean hiding difficult feelings - it means finding ways to keep going, with support from others when needed. Ideas for support are included in the lesson plan 'Loss, bereavement and change' and in the longer lesson plan for this Lyfta Time 'Kids' Cup: Yu from China', details at the bottom of these notes. You could use this lesson to explore themes such as: being a captain and role model, coping with loss, and dealing with winning and losing. This mini-lesson can be delivered either from the front of the classroom using a central computer and screen, or for students who have access to their own computers or devices.
