This lesson introduces Hanukkah and the special traditions it can involve, including the cooking and eating of latkes, a fried potato dish. **Note:** You will need equipment and cooking ingredients, as per the latkes recipe rich media article. Although this can be a stand-alone lesson, it would be useful to teach the initial lesson 'Celebrating Hanukkah' first to gain some wider context. The film shows the family celebrating Hanukkah and local Jewish people embracing the different communities in their neighbourhoods. **National Curriculum objectives:** KS1 (Design) Food Technology - use the basic principles of a healthy and varied diet to prepare dishes. KS2 (Design) Food Technology - understand and apply the principles of a healthy and varied diet - prepare and cook a variety of predominantly savoury dishes using a range of cooking techniques. KS3 (design) Food Technology: - understand and apply the principles of nutrition and health - cook a repertoire of predominantly savoury dishes so that they are able to feed themselves and others a healthy and varied diet - become competent in a range of cooking techniques [for example, selecting and preparing ingredients; using utensils and electrical equipment; applying heat in different ways; using awareness of taste, texture and smell to decide how to season dishes and combine ingredients; adapting and using their own recipes]. RE (all stages): There are opportunities to explore aspects of the RE curriculum as applies in your setting, according to your agreed RE syllabus, e.g.: 1. To know and understand the ways that Hanukkah can be celebrated within a family or community 2. To reflect on the ways faith is expressed and practiced in Judaism. KS2 PSHE R6. that a feature of positive family life is caring relationships; about the different ways in which people care for one another R7. to recognise and respect that there are different types of family structure; that families of all types can give family members love, security and stability R8. to recognise other shared characteristics of healthy family life, including commitment, care, spending time together; being there for each other R32. about respecting the differences and similarities between people and recognising what they have in common with others L6. about the different groups that make up their community; what living in a community means L7. to value the different contributions that people and groups make to the community L8. about diversity: what it means; the benefits of living in a diverse community; about valuing diversity within communities. KS3 PSHE R3. about the similarities, differences and diversity among people of different race, culture, gender and age.
