This lesson invites pupils to understand the significance of names in shaping our identities, and the importance of pronouncing names correctly and using preferred names. It would be ideal to ask pupils to speak with their families about their names before the lesson, but this could be follow up home learning. It would be especially relevant at the start of the school year to help the class teacher and support staff learn pupils' names! There are a number of short fiction books you could explore as a way to draw more from the theme of names and identities, e.g. - Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes - The Name Jar by Yangsook Choi - Say My Name by Joanna Ho **National Curriculum objectives:** KS2 English (reading comprehension) - to read texts structured in different ways and for a range of purposes, identifying main ideas and summarising these, - to retrieve and record information from non-fiction. KS2 Citizenship - to reflect on spiritual, moral, social, and cultural issues, using imagination to understand other people's experiences, - to think about the lives of people living in other places and times, and people with different values and customs, - that differences and similarities between people arise from a number of factors, including cultural, ethnic, racial and religious diversity. PSHE, all stages - To understand that names are an important part of our personal identity, - To learn to appreciate the uniqueness of our names and those of our classmates, - To recognise the importance of saying names correctly and using nicknames only if the person suggests it.
