Pri Values - Courage & Resilience 5: Lukas (1/2)

Meet Lukas in Denmark - running towards hope.

Teacher notes

In this 5th session of the Courage & Resilience unit, pupils explore what it means to live with a long-term health challenge, and how courage can come from unexpected places. Through Lukas’ story in Denmark, pupils see how belief in something bigger than ourselves, whether it’s family, faith, or a hopeful goal, can help us take brave steps in everyday life. This lesson encourages reflection on how inner strength is built through support systems, positivity and persistence, and how young people can find their own sources of courage. **In the next session of this unit we watch Part 2 of the film, where learners can see the film's conclusion.** This short lesson can be delivered either from the front of the classroom using a central computer and screen, or for students who have access to their own computers or devices. Like ALL Lyfta storyworlds, these characters are unique. We don't share stories as being 'typical' or as 'single stories' of people or places. Suggested introduction for each session in Year of Values: Each week, we explore a powerful human story from a different part of the world, using real-life voices and experiences to help us better understand the values that shape our lives. **Learning objectives**: Understand that courage can involve vulnerability and trust. Recognise how family, faith and friendship help us grow resilience. Reflect on how hopes and fears are part of setting meaningful goals. **Summary of Storyworld**: This storyworld follows 12-year-old Lukas in Denmark, who lives with a heart defect and dreams of running like other children. His story is one of faith, family, and courage. Lukas belongs to a Christian biker church and finds strength in prayer and community. As he trains for his school sports day, Lukas draws on his belief that God will help him run well – while also training with determination. His story invites us to consider how hope, courage and resilience help us live with uncertainty. **National Curriculum Links** **PSHE / RSHE** H25: Recognise their increasing independence and how to show resilience.
