Revisit Romy and her circus family, showing us how perseverance and growth come from adapting to change and working together.

Teacher notes

Teach lesson 1 from this storyworld first (lesson 5 in the perseverance and growth unit) . In this session we watch Part 2 of the film pupils discover how perseverance and growth can be woven into everyday family life. Through Romy’s story, they learn that perseverance isn’t only about success - it’s about adapting, balancing joy and challenge, and learning resilience through change. The discussion around leaving friends helps make emotional connections before Lesson 2’s deeper focus on perseverance and growth in action. **Learning objectives**: Understand how perseverance and growth are shown through Romy’s family life and work. Reflect on what helps people adapt to new challenges and environments. Recognise that perseverance can mean caring for others as well as trying hard ourselves. Reflect on how their understanding of perseverance and growth has evolved across the unit. **Summary of Storyworld**: My Circus Family follows Romy, a young circus performer from Belgium, as she and her family travel across Europe to perform. Life in the circus is full of excitement, but also challenges - constant travel, long practice hours, and learning away from school and friends. Through their determination, creativity, and strong family bonds, Romy and her family show that perseverance and growth come from working hard, adapting to change, and finding joy in what you love, even when life looks different from everyone else’s. **Suggested introduction for each session in Year of Values**: Each week, we explore a powerful human story from a different part of the world, using real-life voices and experiences to help us better understand the values that shape our lives. In this session, we’re focusing on the values of perseverance and growth, but not by giving a fixed definition. Instead, we’ll reflect, question, and explore how people like us (and unlike us) live out this value in the real world. This is about growing our awareness of ourselves and others and being aware of the relationship between the two. Together, we’ll develop our own understanding through thoughtful reflection and respectful dialogue. **National Curriculum Links** **PSHE / RSHE (Statutory 2020)** H16: strategies and behaviours that support mental health and wellbeing (including coping with change, routines, and uncertainty).
