In this 1st lesson of the Stewardship & Responsibility unit, pupils explore what it means to care for the planet and take responsibility for the impact of their choices. Through Rob’s storyworld, The Beachcomber, pupils discover how one person can make a big difference by taking care of the environment in creative and inspiring ways. The session encourages curiosity and empathy, helping pupils reflect on how small actions can protect the natural world and inspire others to do the same. **Learning objectives**: By the end of this lesson, pupils will: Understand what stewardship and responsibility mean in the context of everyday life. Recognise that individuals can make positive changes to protect nature. Reflect on their own responsibility for caring for shared spaces like beaches, parks, and playgrounds. **Summary of storyworld**: The Beachcomber follows Rob, an artist and beach cleaner from Cornwall, UK. Each day, he collects plastic washed up on the beach and transforms it into striking sculptures that remind people to care for nature. His work celebrates the beauty of the coastline and highlights the importance of reducing waste and protecting our oceans. **Suggested introduction for each session in Year of Values**: Each week, we explore a powerful human story from a different part of the world, using real-life voices and experiences to help us better understand the values that shape our lives. In this session, we’re focusing on the values of Stewardship & Responsibility, but not by giving a fixed definition. Instead, we’ll reflect, question, and explore how people like us (and unlike us) live out this value in the real world. **National Curriculum Links** **PSHE/ RSHE ** L5, L6: Responsibilities towards the environment and the role of individuals and groups in caring for the planet. **Citizenship (KS1/KS2)** Develop understanding of rules, rights and responsibilities in community life.
