In this 3rd lesson of the unit, pupils explore how stewardship can take the form of caring for wildlife and habitats. Through Mohit’s story in north-eastern India, they discover that responsibility isn’t just about cleaning up or using fewer resources, it’s also about protecting the lives of other creatures who share our planet. This session encourages empathy for animals, curiosity about ecosystems, and awareness of how people around the world work to protect biodiversity. **Learning objectives**: By the end of this session, pupils will: Understand what stewardship means in the context of caring for nature and animals. Recognise how humans and wildlife depend on each other. Reflect on how empathy and responsibility help protect our shared environment. **Summary of Storyworld**: Guardians of the Canopy follows Mohit, who lives in Baraki village, Assam, India, where he helps protect endangered Hoolock Gibbons, India’s only ape species. He works with his community to preserve the forest that the gibbons call home, planting trees, feeding them safely, and teaching others to live in harmony with wildlife. Through this story, pupils see how responsibility extends beyond local actions, connecting humans, animals, and ecosystems across the planet. Each week, we explore a powerful human story from a different part of the world, using real-life voices and experiences to help us better understand the values that shape our lives. In this session, we’re focusing on stewardship and responsibility - not by giving a fixed definition, but by asking how people like Mohit show care and commitment to others, including the natural world. This is about growing our awareness of ourselves and the planet, and learning that small acts of care can protect big systems - like forests, rivers, and communities. **National Curriculum Links** **PSHE / RSHE** H2, H3: About choices that support wellbeing and the environment. L9: About respecting and valuing living things and the natural world. **Citizenship (KS1/KS2)** That resources can be used and shared responsibly. To care about other people’s feelings and the wider environment. To think about the lives of people living in other places and people with different values and customs. **Geography (KS2)** Locate the world’s countries using maps, focusing on Asia (India) and environmental regions like rainforests. Describe and understand key aspects of human and physical geography, including deforestation and resource management. **Science (KS2)** Recognise that living things can be grouped in a variety of ways. Identify that environments can change and that this can pose dangers to living things.
