This lesson introduces Mohit, leading conservation efforts in his local area to protect rare hoolock gibbons and their habitats. It is most suitable for KS2 although the reading comprehension activity can be read by an adult and oracy developed with an oral Q&A for Y2. **National Curriculum objectives:** KS2 Science - recognise that environments can change and that this can sometimes pose dangers to living things - explore examples of human impact (both positive and negative) on environments, for example, the positive effects of nature reserves or garden ponds; negative effects of deforestation - notice that animals, including humans, have offspring which grow into adults - find out about and describe the basic needs of animals for survival (water, food, habitats, etc). - describe how living things are classified into broad groups according to common observable characteristics and based on similarities and differences - identify how animals and plants are adapted to suit their environment in different ways and that adaptation may lead to evolution. You could develop classification of species, e.g. introduce or extend the vocabulary and understanding of mammals, and that gibbons are mammals just like us (live young, etc). KS2 English - read texts structured in different ways and for a range of purposes - draft and write for different purposes - retrieve, record and present information from non-fiction - explain and discuss their understanding of what they have read - provide reasoned justifications for their views. KS2 Geography - describe and understand key aspects of physical geography, including: climate zones, biomes and vegetation belts, rivers, mountains and forests. KS2 Maths - Write real life maths problems as number sentences - Use simple maths problem solving involving: calculation, fractions, decimals, percentages, deciding which operations and methods to use and why. KS1 PSHE L2. how people and other living things have different needs; about the responsibilities of caring for them L3. about things they can do to help look after their environment. KS2 PSHE L4. the importance of having compassion towards others; shared responsibilities we all have for caring for other people and living things; how to show care and concern for others L5. ways of carrying out shared responsibilities for protecting the environment in school and at home; how everyday choices can affect the environment (e.g. reducing, reusing, recycling; food choices).
