Teacher notes

This is an ideal introductory lesson into the Amazonian Treats storyworld! It is most suitable for the KS2 age range but touches on KS3 Geography and DT (see below) and is easily adaptable for KS1. The first two activities ('Let's visit the rainforest in Peru' and 'Let's visit Shepetiari village') would be perfect for a topic on Travel or Rainforests in KS1. The film in the third activity could also be shown as a whole class, with the teacher reading the subtitles. **We recommend quickly reading the Amazonian People rich media article to give you some background on indigenous communities in this region, before teaching from the storyworld Amazonian Treats. As in all Lyfta storyworlds, these short films are snapshots from William and Flora's lives, members of the indigenous Matsigenka tribe.** **Lyfta core themes:** Culture and Identity, Natural Environment, Health and Wellbeing. **Lyfta core skills and values**: Environment and Sustainability, Empathy and Understanding Others, Healthy Living, Intercultural Competence. **SDGs:** 2, 3, 11, 12, 15. **National Curriculum objectives:** KS1 Geography to use basic geographical vocabulary to refer to: key physical features, including: beach, cliff, coast, forest, hill, mountain, sea, ocean, river, soil, valley, vegetation, season and weather; key human features, including: city, town, village, factory, farm, house, office, port, harbour and shop. KS2 Geography to locate the world’s countries, using maps to focus on South America, concentrating on their environmental regions, key physical and human characteristics, countries, and major cities to understand geographical similarities and differences through the study of human and physical geography of a region of the United Kingdom, and a region within South America. Describe and understand key aspects of: physical geography, including: climate zones, biomes and vegetation belts, rivers; human geography, including: types of settlement and land use, economic activity including trade links, and the distribution of natural resources including energy, food, minerals and water. KS3 Geography pupils should be taught human geography relating to: population and urbanisation; international development; economic activity in the primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary sectors; and the use of natural resources to understand how human and physical processes interact to influence, and change landscapes, environments and the climate; and how human activity relies on effective functioning of natural systems. KS1 Science: to identify that most living things live in habitats to which they are suited and describe how different habitats provide for the basic needs of different kinds of animals and plants, and how they depend on each other. KS2 Science to identify that animals, including humans, need the right types and amount of nutrition, and that they cannot make their own food; they get nutrition from what they eat to explore examples of human impact (both positive and negative) on environments, for example, the positive effects of nature reserves, ecologically planned parks, or garden ponds, and the negative effects of population and development, litter or deforestation. KS1 Design Technology (Cooking and Nutrition) to understand where food comes from. KS2 and KS3 Design Technology (cooking and nutrition): to understand seasonality, know where and how a variety of food ingredients are grown, reared, caught and processed (source, seasonality); and characteristics of a broad range of food ingredients. KS2 PSHE H6. about what constitutes a healthy diet; how to plan healthy meals; benefits to health and wellbeing of eating nutritionally rich foods. KS3 PSHE H17. the role of a balanced diet as part of a healthy lifestyle and the impact of unhealthy eating choices H18: what might influence decisions about eating a balanced diet and strategies to manage eating choices.
