This is a KS2 reading comprehension lesson based around the RMA 'Volcanoes: Part 1'. During this lesson, children are explicitly taught the skills of reading comprehension (outlined in the National Curriculum and the KS2 test domain) through the use of the 'VIPERS' acronym: Vocabulary, Inference, Predict, Explain, Retrieve and Summarise; used by many schools and attributed to Literacy Shed. The article also makes cross curricular links to KS2 Science and Geography. **Lyfta core themes:** natural environment, learning and growth. **Lyfta core skills and values**: Collaboration and Teamwork, Information retrieval, communication, research. **SDGs:** 7, 11, 15, 16. **National Curriculum Objectives:** KS2 English (Reading) 2a give/explain the meaning of words in context (Vocabulary) 2b retrieve and record information/ identify key details from fiction and non/fiction (Retrieve) 2c summarise main ideas from more than one paragraph (Summarise) 2d make inferences from the text/ explain and justify inferences with evidence from the text (Inference) 2e predict what might happen from details stated or implied (Predict) 2f identify/explain how information/ narrative content is related and contributes to meaning as a whole (Explain).
