Welcoming Strangers: Part 1

Please note, this lesson is divided into two parts, parts 1 and 2. This lesson can be taught as a stand alone lesson or use the second lesson to allow students to respond in more detail or to give more time to view Adhanom's 2 films. 🚦**Part 1 of the documentary film, Don't Give Up, is most suitable for KS3 and above. Adhanom recalls aspects of a dangerous sea crossing and long journey which some students might find upsetting.** **If you would like to replace Adhanom's film Part 1, you could instead show Part 2 alone, and/or open and view the rich media article 'Adhanom's Journey', which includes a very short interview with Adhanom explaining why he left Eritrea.** In this lesson, students will meet Etagegn from Awra Amba in Ethiopia and Adhanom who is from Eritrea, now living in Sweden. Students will be asked to watch the short documentary films about these two people and compare the attitudes of their new host communities. **Please be aware of, and sensitive to, any students who may have lived experience of seeking asylum.** **Lyfta core themes:** Community and Citizenship, Culture and Identity, Equality and Human Rights, Health and Wellbeing, Professions and Entrepreneurship, Relationships. **Lyfta core skills and values**: Active Citizenship & Political Awareness, Active Listening, Communication, Empathy & Understanding Others, Human Rights, Research. **SDGs:** 3,10,11,16,17. **KS3 and KS4 English skills:** - Identifying perspectives - Using evidence to support ideas - Comparing perspectives.
