Lesson plan

Writing to persuade: Part one

We'll visit Tamara in the Netherlands and find out ways in which her city is inclusive and accessible. We'll compare Amsterdam with where we live and start to plan a response to a persuasive writing question.

Teacher notes

This lesson is the first of two parts, focusing on persuasive writing. During this lesson, students will meet Tamara who, as a result of a brain injury, lost the ability to speak and also suffers from loss of movement on one side of her body. Students will get the opportunity to explore the city of Amsterdam and identify ways in which it has been designed to allow for equitable access for all. Students will use this as a stimulus to reflect on the design of their local area and plan to write a letter to their local MP, persuading them to make their village, town or city more inclusive. The second lesson (Writing to persuade: Part two) will ask students to write their answer, using the key skills required to write quality non-fiction texts. **Lyfta core theme**: Equality and human rights, Technology and engineering, Health and wellbeing. **Lyfta core skills and values**: Communication, Critical Thinking, Empathy & Understanding Others, Human Rights. **UN SDGs**: 3, 10. **KS3 and KS4 English skills** - planning - organising information and ideas - writing non-fiction - audience, purpose and form - using language effectively - vocabulary
