Sec Values - Compassion & Empathy 4: Leah (2/2)
Revisiting Leah to think more deeply about how empathy helps us understand others.
Teacher notes
In this lesson, students revisit Leah as she prepares for her Bat Mitzvah, a Jewish rite of passage. This event is both a deeply personal milestone and a communal celebration, involving months of preparation. Alongside this, students will explore the Care and Compassion article to reflect on how compassion operates at different levels - from our closest relationships to the wider world. **National Curriculum Links** PSHE (KS3) - Understanding that relationships can impact mental wellbeing positively or negatively. - Recognising the importance of respecting others’ beliefs, faiths, and backgrounds. - Exploring strategies for empathy, compassion, and active listening. PSHE (KS4) - Building resilience and learning how to respond constructively to different viewpoints and life experiences. - Understanding how compassion can improve community wellbeing. - Reflecting on how empathy can challenge prejudice and support inclusion. Citizenship (KS3/KS4) - The diverse national, regional, religious, and ethnic identities in the UK and the need for mutual respect and understanding. - The role of voluntary and community groups in society and the way citizens work together to improve communities. Religious Education (KS3/KS4) - Exploring how religious beliefs, practices, and values influence individuals and communities. - Investigating how traditions can strengthen intergenerational connections. **Suggested introduction for each session in Year of Values** Each week, we explore a real human story from a different part of the world, helping us connect more deeply with the values that guide how we live and relate to others. Today we continue focusing on compassion and empathy - not as abstract words, but as feelings and actions that shape our relationships and communities. Rather than defining them once and for all, we’ll explore how they show up in real people’s lives. Together, we’ll practise noticing what others are feeling, imagining how we might respond with care, and reflecting on what kind of difference small acts of understanding can make. Through conversation and curiosity, we’ll grow our capacity to listen, connect, and care.
