Explore how perseverance helps us grow as learners and people. Izandra in Brazil shows determination and confidence through creative practice and representation. The first lesson in the 'Perseverance and Growth' unit from the Secondary Year of Values programme. ••Aims:•• By the end of the session, students should be able to: - Understand perseverance as both persistence and adaptability in the face of challenge. - Identify ways in which personal growth happens through effort and reflection. - Recognise how self-belief and representation influence motivation and aspiration. - Reflect on their own learning mindset and strategies for coping with difficulty. **Curriculum Links:** PSHE KS3: H1 – assess physical, emotional and social wellbeing and strategies for resilience. H4 – develop resilience, manage setbacks and self-esteem. L1 – identify personal strengths, skills and interests. L9 – recognise the benefits of setting goals and embracing opportunity. PSHE KS4: H3 – maintain emotional and mental wellbeing, including managing stress and challenges. L2 – develop the skills to make progress in learning and life. L5 – reflect on personal development and self-efficacy. KS3 Music Curriculum Connections (optional extras): Appraising and understanding music: Students can also explore Izandra’s violin performances and reflect on the role of music in personal and cultural expression which aligns with “listen with increasing discrimination to a wide range of music from great composers and musicians” (KS3 National Curriculum). Cultural and contextual understanding: The lesson involves exploring music from Brazil, supporting “understanding musical traditions and the works of great musicians.” Creativity and identity: Reflecting on how Izandra uses music to inspire others links to “developing understanding of the history of music, including composers and traditions.” KS4 Music Curriculum / GCSE connections (optional enrichment): Performance and expression: The lesson models performance as self-expression and resilience, relevant to “developing performance skills with technical control and expression.” SMSC / Citizenship: Representation, diversity, inclusion Explores cultural identity and representation through Izandra’s story, encouraging respect for diverse experiences and talents.
