Meet Jasmin, a 12-year-old girl who has lived in Finland all her life but is moving to Somaliland with her family as her father misses his native land. Adapting to life in a new environment is difficult at first, but the more Jasmin discovers about this new place, the more comfortable she becomes. This is a story of home, family and cultural contrasts. Key themes are education, family, migration, the right to play, positive stories, childhood and culture.

Jasmin and her father from the storyworld Home Wasn't Build in a Day
At home in Finland we watch Jasmin play in the snow with her siblings and at the playground with her best friend Maryam. Here the parks and streets look orderly and clean. When she arrives in Somaliland we witness the contrasting sounds and sights. The dry barren land, the chaotic streets where goats and sheep roam, the honking cars and yelling people. Smells that make her "dizzy", rubbish everywhere, hot sun and "no playgrounds outside".

Jasmine discovers that home life is quite different in Somaliland. Although she is surrounded by her family she is quite overwhelmed when she meets so many relatives. "I didn't know who was who." She is scared of the big house and the bugs at night. Mealtimes are also different as Jasmin discovers the food is very spicy and the family eat with their hands, sitting on the floor.

Jasmin is nervous to start school because she has heard about the strict teachers and is worried about making friends. However, she discovers that she has more in common with some of the other children than she thought. Some are also from Europe and "Somaliland felt strange to them too".

As students watch the film they will see how Jasmin overcomes the challenges that are presented to her as she navigates the changes in her life. Although she misses Finland and at first wants to return, she learns to appreciate the nice things about Somaliland such as having family around. In Finland, when her father first arrived, people were not very nice about his dark skin. Here she likes the fact that "no one thinks I look different."
